Author and motivational speaker Matt Mayberry will be speaking at Cold Spring Harbor High School in New York State, Wednesday, September 11, 2013, from 7pm. The former Chicago Bears linebacker will talk to student athletes and parents at their Code of Conduct meeting, prior to the schools sports year, on motivation, leadership, nutrition, and abstaining from alcohol and drugs among other topics.
Mayberry was signed by the National Football League Chicago Bears in 2010, and after reaching the pinnacle of his sport, suffered a life-changing ankle injury. It was this event that inspired Mayberry to embrace his true passion of helping others through personal coaching, development and motivational messages. On his visit to Cold Spring Harbor, Mayberry said, High school was a pivotal time in my life which helped shaped me into the person I am today. These kids are our future, and I am excited to share my journey with them.
Earlier this year, Mayberry published the book A Guide to College Athletic Scholarships: A Personal Journey (ISBN: 978-0-9889705-3-3). The book, a step-by-step guide through the athletic scholarship process, tells the story of how Mayberry went from an average student athlete with little prospects to becoming a dynamic athlete with well over a dozen scholarship offers by his senior year.
Mayberry was team captain at Hinsdale South High School where he still holds six school records. At Indiana University he was team captain from 2009-2010, earning All Big-Ten honors in his senior season, and led the Hoosiers in tackles in his junior and senior years. Mayberry was awarded team recipient for the prestigious Howard Brown Award, which exemplifies leadership, courage and work ethic. Mayberry is currently Indiana Universitys record holder for most sacks in a single game.
